Communicating Science

Harmony feels it is her obligation to share the amazing natural world with anyone who wants to hear about it. She has spoken at over 50 international conferences, to numerous school groups, and to strangers on airplanes about corals, coral reefs and most recently, her journey with justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) in academia.

Speaking

In addition to delivering talks at several conferences, Harmony has been invited to speak on various topics including stress memory, the influence of thermal stress on coral metabolism, hormesis as a mechanism for coral stress memory, and most recently, how she thinks about justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in the academy. She has been a panelist at screenings of the documentary film Chasing Coral. Hear some of her talks below!

Connecting with Students

Harmony has shared her research with students in Ohio, Georgia and Iowa schools through the Skype A Scientist program, as well as local schools around the world where she has conducted her research.

Documentaries

Harmony consulted with the Executive Producer of the documentary film Chasing Coral from Palau during the 2016 mass bleaching event and contributed photo and video footage to the film.

SciComm Training & Funding

What do you do when you want to help others do scicomm? Why, organize a workshop, of course! Dr. Martell organized this Science Communication Workshop at UBC, with a keynote by CBC Meterologist Joanna Wagstaff, and many other great speakers for the sessions!

Need to raise money for your research? Harmony produced this video as a grad student to crowdfund her research. Check out her whole campaign here.
