Connecting with Students

Harmony has shared her research with students through her personal connections with local schools in Alabama and Virginia, and through the Skype A Scientist program in Ohio, Georgia and Iowa.

While doing research on Ofu Island, in the Manu’a Islands, American Samoa, Harmony visited the students at Olesega Elementary School. She designed and led a lab activity with the students after Cyclone Victor (2016) to demonstrate how coral reefs protect the shoreline from coastal erosion, using coral skeletons she collected from the beach and putty in clear plastic shoe boxes. OES students were especially proud of their strong corals!

Harmony visited ASCC to share a bit about her research on Ofu Island with marine science students & she designed and implemented an interactive activity to demonstrate trophic connectivity on corals reefs with ecology students.
